This week i have had the pleasure of meeting and selling a couple of my Kombis to famous Australian artist John Rigby. He really does paint some amazing work and has recently launched his own website…http://www.johnrigby.com.au
Worth checking out alone just to see one of his latest pieces inspired by the humble Kombi. An old split screen panel van belonging to friend who used to own a pie shop was sat rusting away in a scrap yard and John captured it’s final resting place perfectly in a picture called “piescape“. This can be purchased direct from John’s site in a variety of formats.
John’s nostalgic scenes of Australia around the eras of 1930 to 1960 have really hit a chord with me and i am sure you will have great fun browsing the site . Old cars, pick up trucks, beaches and woodies and of course the Australian bush. Pick up a present for yourself or a friend direct off the site.
Meanwhile here is the beautiful kombi that John will be buying from me and the one he is going to restore himself..no doubt with some incredible results!! Will keep you updated as the white ones becomes finished …enjoy…![]()
and the resto project…..John can’t decide on the combination of the original colour with a white roof or the ever popular vw sky blue!!! decisions decisions!!!![]()

Jordy contacted me regarding water leaking in past the chrome and rubber scrapper on the front door of his KOMBI!
You too?? Your going to need to change it then! Don’t panic!
Here is what you do….
First buy the better quality items for this job…it makes it so much easier and looks and seals so much better….
You going to strip the window frame down first..kinda follow your nose here taking care to watch how it all comes apart…
Take off the door panel with the various screws…. wind the window so that you unscrew the 10mm nuts holding it onto the frame and let it drop slowly off the runner to rest in the bottom of the door.
Then carefully with a flat blade screwdriver hook the big felt channel out..it may come with the black metal clips that hold it in place..if it does not you will need to flick them out with a screwdriver again.
To remove the 1/4 light there is a 10mm nut holding the leg of the frame to the door and a screw holding the top to the top of the frame..search for it!!
then wiggle the frame clear and then remove the chrome scrapper and inner rubber!Go on yank them out!All done!
Getting it back together!gulp…
Have a practice putting the inside scrapper in and out of the door frame..make sure all the holes are free from gunk or old metal and practice popping it in and out…you need to put pressure on either side of the metal and squeeze it into the hole where it will spring apart and lock into place..also by doing it a few times it loosens it up for when you need to do it when the chrome scrapper is in and there is not so much room.
Okay…. be very careful with the chrome scrapper …one false move and it will kink…get a friend to help first time!
Line it up with the original holes again making sure the holes are clear..if there is a bit of metal in there just poke it out with a screwdriver..
So line it up and you will see when it drops in the first hole..the others need to be near their holes but do not have to be in them..
Push with 2 of your fingers and pop it in..big clunk and you will feel it locate..phew! scary that bit..now line the rest up and pop them in..BE CAREFUL they need to be lined up and popped in with some force but don’t over do it and bend the tab or it will not locate tight again…
Some people take the window out and put it back in after the chrome scrapper is in but it is okay to leave it at the bottom of the door..if it is still attached to the mechanism it will get in the way!
Next secure the chrome scrapper by using the metal clips to hold it tight to the frame..these can be tricky to..take your time..some pressure with a flat blade but not to much and don’t slip!! Can do it with your fingers if they are tough! or gloves!!
1/4 light goes back in with the new rubbers and felts already installed…lubricate the rubber scrappers and the metal on the frame where it will slide into the frame with some silicon spray or washing up liquid!
Slide it in and into place making sure to tuck the chrome scrapper behind the rubber.
locate it with the 10mm bolt and screw at the top.
Insert the felt trim and attach the window to the mechanism and spray the rubbers again with silicon before winding the window up!!
Fit your panel back on and you are done!!! Looks great hey!
